What is a colony counter?
A colony counter is an instrument that counts bacterial or fungal colonies on a culture plate, either by giving the operator contrast lighting and a tally mechanism, or by photographing the plate and counting the colonies automatically through image analysis.
The reason the category exists is that counting plates by eye is slow, tiring and inconsistent. Two competent microbiologists counting the same crowded plate will not produce the same number. Neither will one microbiologist counting the same plate on a Monday and a Friday.
That variation is invisible in your records. It shows up as unexplained scatter in your data, and in accredited laboratories it shows up in audit.
Manual or automatic?
Manual counters improve the ergonomics and traceability of human counting. Automatic counters replace it.

There is a legitimate case for both. The mistake is choosing on price without doing the arithmetic.
When does an automatic counter pay for itself?
Work out your plates per day, multiply by the minutes saved, and compare the annual labour cost against the instrument.
Here is the calculation, with every assumption stated so you can substitute your own figures.
Assume a crowded plate takes two minutes to count carefully by hand and ten seconds on an automatic counter including handling. That is a saving of roughly 1 minute 50 seconds per plate.

These are illustrative figures, not a quotation. Your counting time depends on colony density and media type, and your labour cost is your own. Run the table with your numbers. The point is that the calculation is worth doing, because at volume the instrument is usually not the expensive part of the decision.
The second half of the return is harder to price but easier to defend in an audit: consistent results, a saved image of every plate, and no transcription step between the plate and the record.
Which specifications actually matter?
Minimum detectable colony size. 0.1 mm is standard. 0.05 mm is the high-performance figure. If your organisms produce pinpoint colonies, or you are enumerating stressed or injured cells that grow slowly, the smaller threshold changes your count rather than just your speed.
Media and format compatibility. Not every counter handles every format. Check for the ones you actually use: standard Petri dishes, chromogenic agar, Petrifilm, MC-Media Pads, Compact Dry, easyPlate and filtration membranes are all in routine use and they are not all supported by every model.
Plating mode. Pour plate, surface plate, spiral plating and circle mode need different counting geometry. Spiral plating in particular requires the instrument to apply the correct deposition algorithm, so confirm it is supported if you use it.
Chromogenic discrimination. Chromogenic media identify organisms by colour. A counter that cannot separate colours cannot use that information, and you are back to counting by eye.
Inhibition zone reading. For disc diffusion susceptibility testing, an instrument that measures zone diameters removes a ruler and an operator judgement from the process.
Data export. USB, LIMS connectivity and CSV or text output remove manual transcription. In an accredited laboratory that is usually worth more than the counting speed.

Counting rules worth getting right
Stay in the countable range: For aerobic colony counts the conventional countable range is 25-250 colony forming units per plate: Below that the count is statistically unreliable; above it colonies merge and the count under-reports. Dilution series design matters more than instrument choice.
Record the dilution, not just the count: The number on the plate is not the result. Automatic counters that store the plate image alongside the count and the dilution factor remove the most common source of reporting error.

Where the counter sits in the workflow
